What Is a Rally Marshal?
Aside from actually competing, the best way to get involved in any form of motor sport is probably as a safety marshal. Why? Well for one thing it’s easy and for another it’s cheap but more importantly think of the fun you’ll have!
But what do Marshals do?
Well the simple answer is lots of things! Without Marshals rallies, and in fact almost any other form of motor sport event, wouldn’t run. They are responsible for a whole range of duties starting with the setting up of the stage. Once that’s done they play a major role in the operation of stage start and finish controls, managing service halts and ensuring safe spectator control.
There’s no requirement for any formal qualifications, as long as you accompany a qualified marshal, but once you get started there’s the opportunity to learn a whole range of skills such as vehicle recovery, first-aid or fire fighting. If the administration side of things appeals then there’s always lots of roles at rally headquarters that need filling.
Whatever you choose, your presence will be welcomed and appreciated. As a marshal, you will join a band of enthusiasts who enjoy their motor sport and, through several active marshalling clubs, an interesting and enjoyable social life.
There is a serious side to marshalling as we all know that motor sport is dangerous and unfortunately but inevitably accidents do happen. By being in the right place at the right time and having had the right training you could save someone’s life.
Some people join a motor club specifically to go marshalling and have no inclination to compete but motor sport would be poorer without them. If any of this appeals then the best way to become a part of the action is to join your local motor club without delay and get involved!
Become a Rally Marshal
For the South Yorkshire Stages Rally to be successful it needs a LOT of people-power, your help will be greatly appreciated. All motorsport events, from Formula 1 grands prix to club-level rallies, need volunteers to help run them safely and effectively. From pits and paddock to trackside, they do everything from essential administrative work to providing life-saving safety cover.
It doesn’t matter whether you have masses of experience of marshaling, or virtually none, we will welcome you and help you find a suitable role.
Minimum Requirements
In general terms, there are none. Volunteers are welcome at any age, although the duties of young people may be limited in certain situations. Those aged between their 11th and 16th birthdays qualify as cadet marshals and though are unable to perform trackside duties can get involved in a host of other interesting roles.
Motor sport offers ‘equal opportunities’ at all levels, although there are a few legal exemptions, including certain competitor disabilities and minimum ages for both competing and officiating.
If you already have special skills – technical, mechanical, rescue, vehicle recovery, medical, first aid or administration – you may wish to use them as a volunteer in motor sport.
Safety is paramount on any motorsport event now, and as such the Motorsport UK requires all marshals to be registered and for them to have undertaken a short online training course. This online training course takes less than 45 minutes to complete, and once complete you can then register, for free, as a marshal with the Motorsport UK. If you do wish to marshal on the event you will need to be a Motorsport UK (MUK) Registered marshal and have undertaken the Motorsport UK’s on-line accreditation modules found HERE. These are great learning and/or refresher modules covering three topics:
- Roles and responsibilities of a marshal
- Spectator management
- Incident management
If you haven’t already done them it’ll take you between 20 – 45 minutes to run through the learning elements and either learn something new or refresh your memory. In the meantime, you can still enrol to marshal on the event but you must have completed your on-line modules and become a registered marshal before the South Yorkshire Stages takes place.
